The Subaru Crosstrek compact crossover returns for 2019 with a few changes in standard equipment packaging and some new accolades under its belt. Like all other Subarus that were equipped with the EyeSight active safety suite and steering responsive headlights, last model year's Crosstrek won Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), as well as the highest-possible 5 Stars for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Kelley Blue Book (KBB) also found it to have the Lowest Cost to Own for 2018 vehicles.

For 2019, the improvements include making that revered EyeSight active safety technology available on the base 2.0i trim, instead of just the higher Premium and Limited trims as before. All trims are equipped with Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a rear-view camera, vehicle dynamics control, and stability control. The four-cylinder 152 hp engine pairs with either a six-speed manual (available on the base and Premium trims) or a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (standard on the Limited trim and an option on the other two) to achieve an EPA rating of up to 27 city and 33 highway mpg. With 8.7 inches of ground clearance, this capable crossover is especially popular in areas that get considerable snowfall.

Safety & Technology

With so many standard safety features and a suite of seven airbags, the Crosstrek is among the safest vehicles on the road today. The EyeSight package of safety features bundles adaptive cruise control, front emergency braking, lane keep assist/lane departure warning, and pre-collision throttle management. It has been found to reduce injury-causing rear-end crashes by 85 percent. Steering responsive headlights are available as an option to further boost the safety factor. Connectivity is crucial these days, and the Crosstrek is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; there are two USB ports in the front row, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability is standard on the top two trims. The STARLINK infotainment system unites smartphone, music, and Bluetooth functions in a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen (8 inches on the Limited trim). Navigation is available as part of a STARLINK upgrade on the 2.0i Limited.

Passenger Comfort/Cargo Space

Although the Crosstrek is a compact utility vehicle, its passengers won't feel cramped for space. There's ample room for them and their stuff, and the second row is made for three passengers, each getting a headrest for whiplash protection. A specially designed windshield makes the interior relatively quiet, too, for a pleasant ride, and heated front seats come standard on the Premium and Limited trims. Available crossbars add versatility to the standard-equipment roof rails, making it easy for active folks to transport bicycles or gear for snow and water play. Crosstreks equipped with a trailer hitch can pull up to 1,500 pounds.
