Overview

The four-door sedan may often be outshined by its crossover and SUV brethren, but for the 2021 model year, this classic vehicle segment continues to hold its ground. The 2021 Subaru Legacy is a shining example, as it's appointed with quite a few attractive features at a great price. For 2021, this includes a newly standard rear-seat reminder, front and rear passenger seatbelt warnings, steering-responsive LED headlights, and as always, a standard all-wheel drivetrain. While the '21 Legacy isn't on dealer lots yet, here's a preview of what you can expect.

Trims, Powertrains, and Fuel Economy

The 2021 Subaru Legacy will be sold in six trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT. All of these except for the Limited XT and Touring XT have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 182 hp and 176 lb.-ft. of torque. The XT variations receive a more robust turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 260 hp and 277 lb.-ft. of torque. The sole transmission is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with eight-speed manual shift mode. According to EPA estimates, the base-engine 2021 Legacy models will achieve 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, while the turbocharged XT versions return 24 city/32 highway.

Comfort and Convenience

The Base trim comes with 17-inch wheels, LED steering-responsive headlights, automatic climate control, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and a rearview camera system. The Premium adds alloy wheels, heated exterior mirrors, dual-zone automatic temperature control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and heated front seats. Keyless entry and ignition and a sunroof are both optional. The Sport provides keyless entry and ignition as standard equipment along with unique 18-inch black-painted wheels, more athletic styling elements, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, simulated-leather upholstery, and contrasting red interior stitching.

The Limited removes those sporty aesthetic enhancements but retains the aforementioned convenience features and gets memory functions for the driver' seat, a power-adjustable passenger's seat, heated rear outboard seats, and genuine leather upholstery. It's also eligible for a heated steering wheel and a sunroof. While the Limited XT simply adds the more powerful turbocharged engine and sunroof, the Touring XT spoils its occupants with ventilated front seats and upgraded leather upholstery.

Safety

All versions of the 2021 Subaru Legacy are supplied with the automaker's EyeSight suite of active safety aids. This includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure and sway warning, and lane keep assist. Also standard are adaptive high beams and a rear-seat reminder, so kids and pets aren't accidentally left behind. The Premium and Sport are eligible for blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, but the Sport can also be improved with available reverse automatic braking. The Limited receives each of these as standard features, and a driver attention warning system becomes optional. The two XT versions include all of these available driver aids.

Technology

The Base is assigned a well-equipped infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite and HD radio, two USB ports, and a four-speaker audio system. The Premium gets some upgrades: an 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, two rear USB ports, and a six-speaker audio system. Integrated navigation is available. The navigation unit remains optional with the Limited, but it gets a premium 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system as standard. The navigation system is standard on the XT trims.
