Overview

Although the five-passenger Subaru WRX has deep roots in the rally racing scene, that doesn't mean it can't also be your daily driver. The 2020 WRX comes in five fun-to-drive trim levels - the base, Premium, Limited, STI, and STI Limited - all with standard all-wheel drive. Changes for the STI trims this model year include a redesigned front bumper and the standardization of keyless entry and push-button start; the other WRX trims add a welcome lighting system.

The first three trims get their power from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder Subaru BOXER engine (268 hp and 258 pounds-feet of torque) paired with a six-speed manual transmission. For the Premium and Limited trims, a Sport Lineartronic continuously variable transmission with manual mode and paddle shifters is optional. The ultra-sporty STI and STI Limited are powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter BOXER engine (310 hp and 290 lb.-ft. of torque) mated to an upgraded close-ratio six-speed manual transmission with a driver-controlled center differential; there's no CVT option for these trims. Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive) is optional on the Premium and Limited and standard on the two STI trims. This advanced technology fine-tunes the engine control unit and throttle (plus the gear ratio characteristics on models with the CVT), allowing you to experience three distinct drive modes as you wish.

Trim-Specific Features

The base WRX gets performance tires, 17-inch wheels, a low-profile trunk spoiler, a leather-wrapped flat-bottomed steering wheel and performance cloth front seats with red stitching, heated power side mirrors, automatic climate control, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, and race-inspired aluminum-alloy pedal covers. The Premium comes with 18-inch wheels, fog lights, a windshield wiper de-icer, and heated front seats. Optional features include a sunroof, Recaro performance front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat, Brembo brakes,  Ultrasuede leather-trimmed upholstery, and the SI-Drive mode-selector technology.

Upgrade to the Limited and you'll get the sunroof and power driver's seat along with keyless entry with push-button start, LED headlights and fog lights, and leather-trimmed upholstery. Power side mirrors with integrated turn signals are optional, as is SI-Drive. The STI adds those power mirrors with turn signal indicators and SI-Drive, as well as 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, a larger trunk spoiler, dual-zone automatic temperature control, and an STI-specific steering wheel. It loses the sunroof and power driver's seat, though, but the Recaro seats return as an option. With the STI Limited, the sunroof, power driver's seat, and Recaro seats are all included, and the only option it's eligible for is the low-profile spoiler.

Safety

The Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package is installed in conjunction with the CVT, meaning that it's only available on Premium and Limited trims with that optional transmission. (It's not offered on either the base or STI trims - because they come only with a stickshift - or on manual-shift versions of the Premium and Limited). This active-safety technology suite includes pre-collision braking, dynamic cruise control, and lane departure with sway warning. The Limited trim can also add high-beam assist, blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking. The STI Limited gets the blind-spot feature as standard but isn't eligible for high-beam assist or reverse automatic braking.

Technology

The base is outfitted with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite and HD radio, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, a six-speaker audio system, and dual USB ports. The Premium and Limited come with a 7-inch touchscreen, but buyers of the Limited can opt for integrated navigation and a premium nine-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The STI is equipped like the Premium, while the STI Limited gets the navigation and premium audio system among its standard features.
